There has recently been a Xarelto Class Action Lawsuit filed on behalf of people that used the blood thinner drug and suffered serious injuries, including internal bleeding and stroke. Manufactured by Bayer and marketed in the U.S. by Johnson & Johnson’s subsidiary, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Xarelto (an anticoagulant or blood thinner) has been prescribed to many patients to prevent blood clots as a result of atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat), deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, stroke or to patients who have recently undergone a hip or knee replacement surgery. Xarelto has been on the market since 2011 and has been prescribed as an alternative to Coumadin (warfarin).
Serious Xarelto Side Effects:
- Uncontrolled Internal Bleeding
- Blood Clots
- Bleeding in the brain
- Hematoma (a mass in the blood)
- Uncontrolled, unstoppable bleeding after an accident
Other Xarelto side effects include:
- Infection associated with hip or knee replacement surgery
- Decreased hemoglobin
- Swelling of the lower limbs (peripheral edema)
- Difficulty breathing (dyspnea)
Xarelto Lawsuit Update:
The makers of Xarelto (Bayer and Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen Pharmaceuticals) have been accused of failing to warn patients and physicians of the increased risks of fatal internal bleeding when using Xarelto nor have they properly informed doctors of a solution to reverse this uncontrolled bleeding. If patients and physicians had been warned of these risks, they would have likely been prescribed Coumadin (warfarin) which provides an antidote to internal bleeding through high doses of Vitamin K.
The Institute for Safe Medication Practices released a statement in 2012 claiming that Xarelto had received, “a growing number of serious adverse event reports”. From 2011 to 2013, the FDA received over 590 reports of bleeding due to Xarelto and issued Johnson & Johnson a warning about their misleading blood monitoring advertisement. The first xarelto lawsuit was filed in April of 2014 which has now brought more complaints forward, resulting in a multi-district (MDL) Xarelto lawsuit. The FDA reported that three times more people died from adverse events while on Xarelto compared to Coumadin (warfarin). As of January 2015, there are 86 Xarelto lawsuits pending.
Products similar to Xarelto:
- Pradaxa (dabigatran)
- Coumadin (Warfarin)
Have Lawsuits Been Filed Against Other Blood Thinners?
There have been lawsuits filed against the makers of Pradaxa, Eliquis, and Coumadin. However the side effects of Xarelto appear to be much more damaging from early lawsuits filed. A Coumadin Lawsuit filed in 2007 against the drug store Walgreens, where they were found liable for filling the wrong dosage in a prescription and the patient died as a result.
